The rioter's dilemma involves controlling the Racing + Raging thoughts and emotions that occur during the height of an event believed to be in need of change. Certainly, there are rioters with different motives; however, when risky behavior leads to regret, it is essential to self-regulate and wonder what happened to the internal checks and balances that generally help us lead successful lives and solve challenging scenarios.
When humans are passionate about justice issues, the brain perceives this gap as a threat. Individuals seek release from this fear by utilizing the executive part of the brain to formulate a plan to resolve or return the situation to homeostasis. However, emotions and planning are not always on the same intensity, and imbalances may occur that drive planned actions and behaviors in irrational ways.
The amygdala, the seat of the brain's emotions, helps regulate our emotions and help us thoroughly enjoy the good in our lives. Passion is one of those complicated feelings where the brain collaborates systems to create empathy and compassion. However, when passion-fueled aggression occurs, aggression, which is generally regulated by a host of neurotransmitters to stay socially appropriate, flood the brain to the point where irrational behavior may place health and the environment at risk.
Humans have been passionate, driven creatures throughout time to protect their families and communities and improve society. Sometimes actions that are meant to help become obsessive and filled with frustration and aggression and no longer benefit anyone, and the original well-meaning passion becomes filled with regret. When you see someone, you care about, or perhaps yourself start to become lost in the emotions of Racing + Raging, seek the help that Dr. G. suggests so that you may be able to complete the change needed with a measured and mindful passion.
